Goodness Me began twenty-five years ago when we opened our doors to the people of Hamilton, under the enthusiastic leadership of Janet Jacks (a teacher & mom) and her husband Scott (a banker). For the previous few years she had been an avid researcher of natural foods and their impact on health. Janet's husband Scott is a type one diabetic, as are several of his family members. Janet recognized that her children were more likely to develop diabetes because of their genetics. She wanted to do whatever she could to protect them from diabetes, as well as improve her husband's quality of life. Janet's research clearly pointed her to nutrition as the key to protecting her loved ones. Unfortunately, she couldn't easily find the foods and supplements she was looking for, so she opened her store.
In the beginning Janet was the only employee; she baked, ordered, priced, ran cash, and most of all talked to customers, educating people about the importance of a healthy diet. Later in that first year, several staff were added to share in the workload of an increasingly busy store.
During our time in business, we have seen many health food stores come and go. We have managed to succeed because of Janet's commitment to continually educating our customers about the rapidly changing world of health through nutrition. She hosts a radio call-in show on 900AM, CHML, on Saturday mornings at 8:00.
We have now expanded the store to its seventh size, opened a third location, adding thousands of products and an amazing staff of over eighty. Despite our increased size, we have maintained our commitment to products with only the top quality ingredients, differentiating ourselves from others in the industry, along with our commitment to education.
Being healthy means much more than just picking up a bottle of vitamin C or a once-a-day, though that is a start. We at Goodness Me! know that optimum health encompasses a truly healthy diet and the proper, carefully selected supplements tailored to your individual needs; these are the foundation of health, along with attitude and exercise.
The end of Janet's story is a happy one. She has five kids, who are all healthy and diabetes-free. Her husband, Scott, is living well with his diabetes, and the effects of diabetic complications have been miniscule. Her passion remains: that as many people as possible become motivated to find the path to health.
